On October 10, 2024, the Longquan Research Institute of Jingdezhen Ceramic University had the honor of hosting a lecture by artist Sinying Ho, titled "The Past‘s Future." Over 100 participants attended, including American ceramist James Lawton, as well as teachers and students from the Longquan Branch of Lishui Vocational and Technical College and the Longquan Celadon and Sword Technical Institute.

At the beginning of the lecture, Professor Ho shared her life experiences in her hometown of Hong Kong, as well as her subsequent professional experiences in Canada and the United States. From Hong Kong to North America, the blending of Eastern and Western cultural backgrounds continuously shaped her, and she became aware of these changes in herself. This led her to reflect on her evolving identity and incorporate it into her creative work. For instance, in her early piece "Identity," she integrated elements of both Eastern and Western cultures, along with symbols representing her complex identity. As her career progressed, her personal transformation also mirrored broader social changes. She continued to infuse her reflections on humanity’s past, present, and future into her creations. For example, in her work "Beyond Borders: Passage of Time," she incorporated symbols of modern society, such as 5G and stock indices, to express her thoughts on societal shifts and the collective emotions of humanity.

Professor Ho also shared her passion for fragmenting and reorganizing objects as part of her creative process. Her work "Afterglow," which was showcased at the "Blue and White Secret" special exhibition at the Imperial Kiln Museum in Jingdezhen, was inspired by porcelain shards found on shipwrecks along China’s Maritime Silk Road. She hopes that the reassembly of these porcelain fragments will reflect the trajectory of history and guide people to see the lingering light of the past.

Professor Ho also mentioned her early experience as an actress and how she transitioned into becoming a ceramic artist. This unique journey added a distinctive touch to her career in ceramic art. For example, she shared that the musical elements in her installation work Echoes of the Galactic Chime, created during her residency at the Longquan Research Institute, were inspired by the music she encountered in Zhejiang Yue Opera.

In the second half of the lecture, Professor Ho shared her daily life during her residency at the institute and expressed her gratitude to the institute's team and people from various sectors for their support in her residency. Her everyday experiences in Longquan and her dedicated study of celadon have given her a unique understanding of Longquan celadon. She also applied her technique of fragment recomposition to this residency project, hoping to present her understanding of celadon to the world through her distinctive artistic expression.

At the end of the lecture, Professor Ho engaged with the students and faculty present, answering their questions. Finally, she expressed her well wishes for Longquan celadon, hoping that more artists from different fields would come to Longquan to learn about and enrich the celadon culture, thereby promoting the diverse development of Longquan celadon.
