Funda Baysal

Resident artist

Funda Baysal is a visual artist, ceramist and researcher based in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. In January 2025, Baysal arrived at the Longquan Research Institute of Jingdezhen Ceramic University to begin a three-month residency as an artist. As an art researcher, Baysal holds a deep interest and passion for traditional Chinese art. In 2024, she was profoundly captivated by the cultural symbols of birds and nature in traditional Chinese woodblock prints, which inspired her to incorporate these elements into her own works. Later, when she encountered Longquan celadon, she was once again inspired. "The glaze is soft and translucent, evoking a sense of tranquility and timelessness, while the forms often strike a balance between practicality and artistry." This led her to embark on a new artistic journey, using Longquan celadon as her medium.

Her creative practice often explores the relationship between the individual and the surrounding environment, moving between different frameworks. Her creative inspiration is deeply rooted in the observation of daily life and inner feelings, and her practice involves creating solid forms using a variety of materials and material combinations, where the choice of tools, chemicals, and heat plays a crucial role.

Baysal holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Ceramics and Glass from Hacettepe University. She completed her master's practical courses at the Escuela de Arte Superior de Cerámica de Manises. Currently, she runs a ceramic studio in Rotterdam and actively participates in local community projects. She has participated in and organized projects of Stichting Wijkcollectie and Foundation Mesh in Rotterdam.

Her works were selected for the 2023 Jingdezhen International Ceramic Biennale. Her work “Ceramics in D Minor” was featured on the front page of Hudobny Život music magazine in Bratislava, Slovakia, in 2024. She was invited as a ceramic artist representing Holland to participate in the Jury Viewed exhibition at the Officine Saffi Gallery in Italy in 2024. In 2025, her works were selected for the perminent exhibition at the World Museum Rotterdam in the Netherlands.
