On January 2nd, the Longquan Research Institute of Jingdezhen Ceramic University had the honor of hosting a lecture by Renqian Yang, an Associate Professor at the State University of New York at Oswego. The lecture, titled "Exploring My Artistic Creative Thinking and Contingency," was attended by nearly 100 individuals, including Jin Wenwei, the Executive Director of the Longquan Research Institute at Jingdezhen Ceramic University, practitioners from the Longquan celadon industry, students and faculty from Lishui Vocational and Technical College in Longquan, and entrepreneurs in the Longquan ceramic industry.
In the lecture, Professor Yang provided a detailed overview of her creative journey and unique perspectives on the ceramic community. Firstly, she shared her distinctive artistic creative thinking. She believes that artistic creation manifests different states in various environments. This is because individual thoughts are influenced by different surroundings, giving rise to unique works of art in specific contexts. Subsequently, she showcased her works created in different countries and periods, revealing the logic and emotions behind these pieces. These works cover emotions and profound reflections on themes such as urban life and individual experiences, freedom and constraints, as well as the relationship between humanity and nature. In terms of artistic techniques, she actively experimented with the combination of different materials and ceramics to better express her emotions. This innovative approach enhances the expressiveness and originality of her works. Her lecture not only showcased her outstanding achievements in the field of art but also provided the audience with deep insights into ceramic art and creative thinking.
In the course of creation, Professor Yang places a significant emphasis on the impact of contingency on her works, such as the unpredictable changes in the form of ceramics during the firing process due to uncontrollable temperatures. She believes that these chance occurrences not only infuse vitality into the artworks but also prompt creators to gain inspiration throughout the creative process.
The latter part of the lecture focused on Professor Yang's insights into ceramics and community development. She shared experiences of engaging with different groups, such as students, in various ceramic communities and contributing her skills to community initiatives. In particular, she introduced international charitable projects like the "Empty Bowls" project and ceramic communities such as the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) in the United States. She emphasized that meaningful impact arises when people participate in community activities and donations, highlighting the significant influence of artistic creations in society. These communities thus serve as bridges connecting ceramics with society, showcasing the social value of ceramics.
